IAP MOTION

Mobile Multimedia Communication Systems and Networks

Duration

January 2002 - December 2006

Project objectives

The overall objective of the IAP-MOTION network is to develop next generation multimedia services and future QoS-enabled mobile/wireless IP based networks with reliable and bandwidth efficient wireless links, hereby covering aspects from the application level down to the physical channel.
More info on objectives

In order to achieve the research objectives, the following simplified architecture of the future mobile multimedia network is considered.

At the bottom we observe the terminals that support different services. These multimedia services should be able to adapt to the terminals and the network by means of embedded metadata. The wireless terminals are either connected to an access network that may have a fixed infrastructure (e.g. WLAN, GSM, GPRS, UMTS), or they may exchange information without using any fixed infrastructure (ad hoc networks relying on e.g. the Bluetooth or IEEE 802.11 wireless standards). The wireless connections are based on advanced modulation, channel coding and a deep understanding of propagation conditions in order to obtain a very efficient bandwidth usage, a high bitrate, a high user density and in order to support (fast) moving terminals. The network should support mobility (interdomain, intradomain and within an access network) and should provide end-to-end QoS with different characteristics (depending on the service, terminal, access and wireless link technology) and in a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint mode (multicast).
